Modi Inaugurates Navi Mumbai International Airport
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially opened the Navi Mumbai International Airport, an important development for India's expanding aviation sector. Set to start operations in December, this new airport will be the only second international airport in Mumbai, positioning it as a vital hub for both passengers and cargo in Asia. The facility, built by the Adani Group at a cost of approximately $2.2 billion, aims to alleviate congestion at the already busy Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Modi highlighted this project as part of India's broader efforts to modernize infrastructure and enhance air travel connectivity amid a growing economy.
Over the last ten years, India has significantly expanded its airport network, increasing the total from 74 to 160, which is essential for linking smaller cities and boosting economic activity. The new airport is designed to handle up to 20 million passengers annually, with plans to accommodate 90 million in the future. Notably, it will also be the first in India to feature water taxi connections, showcasing innovative transportation integration.
